Sore Nipples in the First Weeks: What Helps and When to Get Support

Nobody really warns you how tender the first weeks of feeding can be. Some sensitivity at the start of a feed is common while you and your baby learn together. But feeding should not keep hurting, and pain that gets worse is your body asking for help, not something to push through.

Why nipples get sore

  • Attachment. The most common cause. If your baby is latching onto the nipple rather than taking a big mouthful of breast, it can pinch and rub.
  • Dryness and friction. Constant wet and dry cycles can leave skin tight and chafed.
  • Damp pads. Sitting in a wet nursing pad can soften skin and make it more fragile.
  • Other causes like tongue tie, thrush or vasospasm, which need a health professional to check.

Gentle things that help

  1. Get attachment checked early. A midwife, child health nurse or lactation consultant can watch a feed and suggest small changes that make a big difference.
  2. Let nipples air dry for a minute or two after feeds.
  3. Use a gentle balm after feeds to keep skin soft and comfortable.
  4. Change nursing pads as soon as they feel damp. Breathable bamboo is kinder to tender skin than plastic-backed options sitting against it all day.
  5. Try different feeding positions so pressure falls on different spots.

When to get support straight away

Please talk to your GP, midwife or a lactation consultant if you have cracked or bleeding nipples, pain that lasts the whole feed or between feeds, white or shiny skin with burning pain, or a red, hot, painful area on your breast with fever. The Australian Breastfeeding Association Helpline is free on 1800 686 268.
