How to Wash and Care for Reusable Nursing Pads (So They Last)

Reusable nursing pads are kind to your skin, your wallet and the planet, but only if they keep working. The good news: caring for them is easy once you have a routine.

Before first use

Wash your new pads before you wear them. Natural fibres like bamboo often become more absorbent after the first few washes.

Everyday routine

  1. Rinse if you can. A quick cold rinse after use helps prevent milk from setting into the fabric.
  2. Pop them in a wash bag. It stops pads getting lost or tangled with bigger items.
  3. Machine or hand wash with your normal load and a gentle detergent.
  4. Air dry. Lay flat or hang to dry, and make sure they are completely dry before wearing again.

What to skip

  • Fabric softener. It coats fibres and can make pads less absorbent.
  • Harsh bleach. It can break down fabric and irritate sensitive skin.

How many pairs do you need?

A simple rhythm is one pair on, one pair in the wash, one pair ready to go. If you leak heavily or wash less often, add another pair or keep a pack of disposables as backup.

When to replace

If pads stop absorbing well, lose their shape or the waterproof layer starts to leak through, it is time for a fresh set.

Always check the care label on your pads, as fabrics can differ.
